Anyone have a gluten-free challah recipe for either bread machine or by hand? This and pizza are the 2 things dd is most upset about. I know there are rice-crust pizza dough recipies and products, but I haven't seen anything about challah (Jewish egg-bread). Thanks!

Oh yes, I would die for some challah bread!
I did see a website from NYC where you could get 2 loaves of challah for $16, and they would ship it for $10 within NYC. So, I'm figuring to get it to Calgary, I'd probably have to re-mortgage my house!

According to GFCFdiet.com, Lori Bakes (724-941-7817 loribakes@adelphia.net) does homemade breads in her kitchen, including challah bread:

Banana Bread
Banana Nut Bread
WONDERful White Bread
WONDERful Hamburger Buns
WONDERful Mini Hamburger Buns
WONDERful Hot Dog Buns
Corn Bread
Challah (Egg Bread)
Cinnamon Raisin Bread

She doesn't have a web site yet but on the GFCF site they make it sound like she bakes as a home business, I bet if you email she will send you prices, etc.

Wow! Thanks for all the help! We just got the date for the biopsy - 10/28. I'm going to have some challah waiting for her just in case. Dr is on vaca - when he's back I will try to find out if the biopsy is neg would we be gluten-free anyway with the way her bloods were - I assume we would.

Not sure where you live but my family owns kosher restaurants in NY. Although they haven't started to make special gluten-free versions of stuff, we have determined a lot of their mainstream items (inlcuding most of their soups) are gluten-free. Let me know if you live in the NY area and I'll give you the info.

Oh and the site Lori was referring to that will deliver gluten-free Challah is Everbody Eats Inc. I haven't tried the challah yet but my assistant ordered me the brownies for my birthday and they were amazing!!!

Hey Jillian - I'm right near you, in Bergen county! I would love to know which restaurants! We are seeing Philip Kazlow at Presbyterian. We have Whole Foods near us. DD's metabolic dr is at WCMC so I sometimes go to Mrs. Green's. We used to live in Hartsdale. Talk to you later!

The problem I've found with baking gluten-free challah is it definitely doesn't have that same consistency as regular gluten filled goodness challah. But if someone has a fantastic recipe, I'm willing to try it again. I've made Bette Hagemans, and it smells like challah but definitely isn't the real thing. Sigh...
