I was recently diagnoised with celiac. I am going to get my hair colored and was wondering about that. Do I have to watch what they use? How about going to the dentist? I have to go there at the end of the month. So many questions. I am learning how to read the ingredients list slowly. I have my safe and forgiven list with me all the time and I am checking everything. Thanks for any information.

Hi Nicki

I just finished reading the book, "Wheat Free, Worry Free" by Danna Korn. (It is awesome by the way and very helpful for a new Celiac.) She speaks of cosmetics, shampoos and such and says that there is no need to worry, (maybe if your symptoms are DH) but that you do not ingest those items (maybe if you were a baby) and your body does not absorb them, so I think you would be safe to have your hair colored.

Not sure about the dentist though. Maybe a phone call to the office to question the cleaner?

Good luck to you.

Lipsticks, facial moisturizers, and shampoos *can* enter the mouth to some degree, and should be checked for ingredients. Do call the dentist and have them check the ingredients in the products they'd need to use on you.

I am not sure if any of this is pertinent to celiac, but I would recommend to your dentist that you inform him on your condition. You may need an antibiotic, or some teeth cleaning and you might suggest that they use non powdered gloves when they do their work. I don't know exactly what they are powders with, but any power stuff makes me a little uncomfortable.

Welcome to our world. I hope that this was helpful and I am sure that others will post.

Definately make sure that the dentist knows that you have Celiac. They make a tooth cleaning and polishing product that is gluten free, but make sure your dentist has it. My dentist did not on my first teeth cleaning and I got sick. He now uses gluten-free on all of his patients. Welcome, as this forum is so helpful in every aspect.

Thanks for all the replies. I don't know why it went in here. I put this in another area. I will call the dentist tomorrow so they will have about 2 weeks to figure out things for me. Shampoo is okay, I use dove products. I can't wait to get my hair cut and colored.

I have seen a few hair colors with Wheat and I steer clear! My hair was falling out from shampoo that had wheat in it!
