Chili's is, so far, the only restaurant I have eaten at that has been extremely accomodating and safe for me to eat at. I have always gotten the grilled chicken fajitas without tortillas and using unmarinated chicken. Today I had some time to talk to the manager and asked him about the chips. I have eaten them and been fine in the past and I know that they claim some cross contamination so they don't label them as safe.
Anyway, he told me they fry all the chips in the morning after they replace half the oil from the day before. AND the vat they fry the chips in is only used occasionally for other products other than fries, so the risk of CC is pretty low. Plus I am wondering if the amount of gluten left in the vat after they replace half the oil is enough to cause problems. I guess if you are extremely sensitive you shouldn't eat the chips, and I don't eat too many anyway, but I have yet to get sick eating there and today was my 4th time.
everytime I have eaten at Applebees I have gotten sick with CC, so I am thinking whatever gluten IS in the chips is extremely low, below that % that the govt., or whoever says is ok.
ANyWhOOOooo, just wanted to share what I learned today from Chili's.
P.S. Of course, that is the Chili's in Brookfield Wisconsin, and as they are all franchised I am sure you should check with your local one to see if they do the same things.....
