How many of you have had diabetes come to the fore after having been diagnosed with celiac and gone on the gluten free diet?

I was diabetic first (for 26 years) before I was diagnosed with Celiac almost a year ago.

My diabetes was diagnosed March 7, 1986. I went on insulin that day. Celiac disease was not diagnosed until July 6, 2000, but I know I had it for years before that. I had symptoms that I now know for sure were from celiac as early as 1994, and various mysterious gastric disorders as far back as 1970. What I wonder is: Did I have celiac disease 35 years ago? If it had been correctly diagnosed and treated, would I have ever developed diabetes?

I was diagnosed with diabetes in 1984 & celiac in 2004.

Boy, this thread is flying in the face of all the famous statistics, which tell us that celiac is so often a precursor to diabetes, and rarely the other way around. I, too, became a diabetic a long time before my celiac diagnosis (thirty-three years diabetic, six months known celiac). Boy, talk about dietary challenges now!
