I found these at Kroger and thought I'd give them a try, figured, How bad can it be? YUCK! The sauce was ok, but I thought the noodles were just downright nasty! I much much prefer using Tinkyada elbow noodles and Kraft's cheese in the shaker tube...

The box of the Annie's was almost $3 and it was just nasty. I won't be buying it again. My daughter had one bite, looked at me with this pitiful look and said "Do I HAVE to eat it mommy?" the look of relief on her face when I told her no she didn't have to eat it was priceless.

I have NOT found a mac n cheese that tastes like anything but cardboard ph34r.gif . Which is probably a good thing for me, because of my dairy allergy, which got much worse after going gluten-free. Since I made those Monte Cristo Sandwiches for lunch guests this past Saturday, I now have to wait another month before I make Pizza Pockets (think I got this fantastic well loved recipe from Nini?).

I made Annie's too and it was NASTY!!! THe noodles were discusting. WEll one day I had one still and had Tinkyada pasta, so I through out the noodles of Annie's and added her cheese packet to the Tinkyada!! It is way yummy! My kids can all have the same meal, without me making a separate meal for my baby. If you are on a budget though it does seem a bit pricey for a pack of cheese, but this has worked GREAT for me!

I hope I am doing this right.

Vincent, here is the recipe. They tasted WONDERFUL. I used K bread (can't spell that company name)

The Monte Cristo Sandwich from the Bette Hagman revised edition is:

8 slices gluten-free bread
2 Tbl. mayo
1 Tbl. mustard
4 thin slices cooked ham (I used Hillshire Farms Deli Select Ultra Thin - then piled on the amount I wanted)
4 slices Swiss Cheese (used Kraft)
4 slices Turkey or Chicken (used Hillshire Ultra Thin Chicken - see note above)
Butter or marg. to spread
2 eggs
1 Tbl. milk or nondairy liquid

Lay out the 8 slices of bread. In a small bowl, combine the mayo & mustard. Spread 4 slices of bread with the mixture. Top with 1 slice (see my note above) each of ham, cheese and chicken. Spread butter on the other 4 bread slices and complete the sandwiches.

Whisk together the eggs and milk. Dip the sandwiches (both sides) in the egg-milk mixture and cook on a preheated oiled griddle over medium (or slightly lower) heat until browned. Turn and brown other side. Try to cook each side about 5 minutes so the sandwiches will be heated through. I cooked them throught so that they looked like the color of a grilled cheese sandwich.

wow...i actually really like annie's...its just a matter of getting the noodles soft enough, and making sure to use enough milk and butter...my only problem is the last time i ate them, i felt like i had been glutened unsure.gif

I don't mind the Annie's (nothing beats the real Kraft stuff!) but the Road's End Organics had to be thrown away. Yuck.

I havent' found the Kraft shaker cheese either sad.gif

I really like the Annie's frozen rice mac & cheese. I think it's probably the closest thing I've had to "regular" mac & cheese. It's not too expensive either (at least not around here at grocery stores).

I also didn't mind Annie's. I did have to season with pepper, salt, and hotdogs but Deboles...right down the drain. That stuff was nasty!

If you're not allergic to dairy, "real" mac'n;cheese is easy--and I think it tastes way better than Kraft.

While your gluten-free pasta is boiling, melt 2-3 tablespoons of butter in a sauce pan (I like to add just a little chopped onion here), add 2-3 tablespoons of either your favorite gluten-free flour blend or some combination of cornstarch/corn meal, stir it around for a minute, whisk in 2 cups of milk (evaporated skimmed works just fine--just don't dilute it with water)and when it bubbles, add 2 cups of shredded cheddar. Stir til cheddar melts, and add your drained pasta.

If you are allergic to dairy, substitute margarine, soy (or maybe not soy--sounds like there's soy trouble for us now) or almond or rice milk, and whatever dairy-free gluten-free cheese you can find at Whole Foods. You might be able to substitute a puree of well-cooked onions, carrots and parsnips and/or sweet potatoes for the cheese--add a little mustard to approximate the tanginess of cheese and a little turmeric for color, and decrease the milk, maybe by half.

There is a dairy free gluten free recipe for mac'n'cheese in Special Diets For Special Kids by Lisa Lewis. I've never tried it, but I hear it's passable!

I like the Annies. They're not like the Tinkyada noodles, they're not as forgiving, you have to get them JUST right or they get kinda sandy tasting. I've been adding the Kraft Mac and cheese shakey cheese to the cheese to boost it a little. I found the Kraft mac and cheese cheese at the third store I looked in. It was right next to the parmesan Kraft Shakey Cheese. Its in a small blue container. Its FABULOUS.
I do not however, enjoy the Amy's Frozen Rice Mac and cheese, but then I didn't like ANY frozen mac and cheese before, I have a fondness for that watery-ness that you get with the boxed stuff.
The Deboles stuff is the most horrible thing I've ever encountered, and was cause for a week of depression as it was one of the first gluten free pre-packaged things I tried when I first got diagnosed. <blech>
I found the design of the Road's end organics mac & cheese box to be offputting, and I treat Gluten Free food like Wine, if I don't like the label, I probably won't like the food, and vice versa.

I hated the Annie's and the DeBoles. I use Tinkyada and the Kraft shaker cheese. I have found that cheese at every Super Wal-Mart and at a Publix. It is the best!

I thought Annie's was the best thing since Kraft Dinner! huh.gif
I eat mine with Ketsup and hot sauce biggrin.gif

I really like the Annie's as well. Although I do add more cheese!

I like a little fresh ground black pepper, and I use a Louisiana Hot Sauce called Red Rooster. Mmmmm.
I actually put Red Rooster on EVERYTHING.
