Hi,
I live in Kona on the Big Island but have to go to Maui sometimes for business.
There are a number of good high end restaurants like Merrimans which will make sure things are gluten free.
They do have a great fruit plate which changes daily depending on whts in season.
Anywhere in Hawaii you have to be careful of soy sauce, they tend to dump it on a lot of things
here. You also have to be careful of soba noddles here. !00% soba is ok but all of the soba sold in hawaii is either only 40% or 60% soba and the rest wheat. Sometimes in Maui English is a problem.
Last week I went to a thai place and told them no flour in a curry so he took the flower off my table!
Sometimes its best to call ahead and see if they can prepare gluten free meals for you. Most of
the resort hotel executive chefs are aware of our problems and will go out of the way to make
sure things are gluten free. Some of the cooks farther down the hotel food chain may not be
so its good to find the chefs office when you check in and make sure they know whats going on.

There are two Outback's there-one in Kihei and one near Kapalua, I believe. There is a Cheeseburger in Paradise there BUT it isn't the same one as on the mainland (they got sued for the name, I believe)-so I don't think they have a gluten-free menu, just to warn you. There is a place called "Down to Earth" that is a deli, health food store, and I believe they have some gluten-free items. There are two of these on Maui, the main one is in Kahului on Dairy Road (big, easy to find). Also the Penne Pasta cafe (chef is Juan Gomez) in Lahaina will serve gluten free pasta for $1 extra and with dairy free lactose free cheese for $2 extra (they are also pretty cheap considering the price of food in Maui-might want to call ahead to see if they still have this-808-661-6633). I would highly recommend getting someplace with a kitchenette if possible, and to pack a good deal of your own food. Just to give an idea, milk on Maui is about $4-6/gallon, generally, and "regular" non gluten-free cereal is between $5-7/box. (Also it's helpful to bring water bottles along and refill on the way, especially if you are driving to Hana or going to Halaekala, where you will want water and there isn't much available). Have fun!

I'm flying to Maui on Thursday morning (10/12) and taking Ener-G Seattle Brown bread in my checked luggage, because Down To Earth Health Foods in Kahalui doesn't carry that brand. However Down to Earth carries other gluten-free breads, cereals, nondairy milk substitutes, hummus, fresh nut butters and Lara bars. I'm sure they carry other favorites, but I only asked about what I usually eat. There's also a great health food store in Paia called Mana Natural Foods plus another Down to Earth in Makawao. I'll be staying in Lahaina and was told by a local celiac friend that Lahaina Foodland has ahi sashimi and nigeri sushi which are gluten/dairy/soy/egg/cane sugar free (my 5 allergy/intolerances). I also made laminated cards listing my food allergies to give to restaurant waiters with my order, after I verbalize requirements for making my entree 'safe'.

If you're vegan, you will LOVE Down to Earth Health Food stores, which have vegan deli and take-out dishes. I eat meats, fish, poultry, but can't tolerate dairy or eggs. So I'm a meat eating vegan. It's an upscale restaurant that caters to special requests. You mentioned staying at the 'Hyatt'. Which city? I think there's a Hyatt in Kaanapali or Wailea. Kaanapali is closer to Lahaina, but Wailea is closer to Kihei which also has lots of good restaurants and open (public) beaches. Maybe you'll spend most of your time at the Hyatt's beach front property, but if you get a chance to travel, be sure to visit Lahaina. It's the most authentic Polynesian town on Maui. If you can drive further, be sure to see Hana on the East coast of Maui, which is free of the huge hotel and condo complexes. Hana has one nice hotel and one general store. We rented private cottages when we stayed in Hana many years ago. OK ... I'm reminiscing now. LOL I hope you have a fantastic Maui experience on your honeymoon.

One of the girls in our support group went to the Hyatt in Kaanapali and had a great gluten free experience. She contacted the executive chief, Matt Smith, and he was very helpful in making sure her meals were gluten free. She contacted him before she left.
You'll have to let us know how it went when you get back. I'm planning on going to Maui for my birthday in February and we always stay at the Hyatt in Kaanapali, but this time I'll be on a gluten free diet. It makes traveling a bit more difficult on a gluten free diet.
Have a great time. Kaanapali beach is one of the best beaches, it's my favorite beach.

Hey! We just ate at Penne Pasta in Lahaina, and it was GREAT!!! The prices were very reasonable, the food was delicious, the portions were generous, and the chef was friendly and well informed. It has quickly become a family favorite. When in Maui, be sure to try them out! 
We just got back from Maui and here was my experience.
The waitstaff down there seem to know more than the average, probably because they get a wide variety of people and more celiacs than most places. All of these places are in Lahaina.
Cheeseburger in Paradise.
The waitress said their fries were not gluten-free, so I just got a bacon cheeseburger, no bun. It was pretty yummy.
Lahaina Fish Company.
The waiter here was extremely helpful, checked with the chef on things I had questions on. I had the monchong fish with salsa, it was really good, but this place was pretty spendy.
The Outback.
Same experience that you'll get on the mainland. The waitstaff isn't that knowledgable, but they have the gluten-free menu, which is nice.
Maui Tacos.
I e-mailed them ahead of time, I can't quote exactly what they said, but basically everything is gluten-free but the flour tortillas and enchilada sauce. I didn't have a problem with the food, but some of my non-celiac family members had some belly issues. Kind of ironic.
Tony Romas.
Same as the mainland, they said in an e-mail that their bbq sauces, chicken and ribs are gluten-free. Yummy, ribs!
I went to Down to Earth food store and got my basic staples, like Pamela's cookies, Peanut Butter Panda Puffs and Amy's gluten-free mac n'cheese. They also have larabars. They were a lifesaver, because I packed a bunch of gluten-free food, but I still didn't have enough.
Basically, the final verdict is that Maui is a pretty easy place to eat gluten-free. If you have the opportunity to go there, take it. It was beautiful and an unforgettable experience. I want to go back!!

Thanks for the good information. My family is going to Maui in 3 weeks, and it will be my first time traveling since getting diagnosed Celiac last fall. I have a 4 year old who has the Celiac gene and is also eating gluten free. Did you come across any more "kid friendly" places that we might have luck at? Thanks!!
