The sauce I'm making tonight calls for 1/2c red wine but i'd like to not have to use alcohol. what liquids can be substituted for red wine?

I guess it all depends on what type of recipe. I would say beef broth for a soup or sauce or something. If it's a salad dressing or marinade I would say red wine vinegar.

You might try equal amounts of apple juice, grape juice, or cranberry juice, with maybe a teaspoon to a tablespoon of vinegar thrown in.
I wouldn't use broth as a sub for wine unless it's unsalted.

Wine, makes for a fabulous sauce on steak. If you are cooking the wine, which most likely you are, the alcohol is cooked out and you only get the wine essence, no alcohol taste.
You could make a demi type sauce, it uses butter, milk, salt and pepper and you could omit the white wine. You could add a little garlic, or onion powder to give it a little kick also.
