Does anyone know if Anisette is ok? What about Lemoncello, Strega, and Di Saronno? I'm asking because I got sick from Hiram Walker Anisette once but not too badly. Also a week after my 21st birthday I had two Martinis and I got really sick. I was diagnosed with Celiac Sprue when I was 20, two weeks before my 21st birthday, which I got sick on either from bad fish or ice cream. I didn't know ice cream could be bad for me. I have been reading threads on this site for months to help me along and I have been calling the companies and checking their sites.

My best answer is to call teh company and ask them! Or do ask.com and write in "Is_________Gluten Free?" But best bet is calling the co!

On the home page of this site is a list of gluten free alcohol. It is very conservative. It is considered that most alcohols that are distilled removed the gain content during the process. Not to say, that some do react as it has been mentioned here.

Capt. Morgans is on the safe list, so that should give you some options. The more components that you add to a mixed drink the increase in suspects. My advise is to keep it simple. Seagrams-7 and 7-up, Rum and Coke. But, CMA statement, many here cannot tollerate liquor at all.

Dairy could well have caused you reaction. I would back off that a bit until your insides are heal a little bit, then try it and see you can handle it.

1st off, there are many kinds of ice cream w/ gluten in the fine print. (Not talking the obvious cookies'n'cream)

2nd, martinis et al vary. The cheaper gins or vodkas or vermouths sometimes adjust the proof as a last step, and the way I heard it, it could be w/ a grain alcohol that somehow wasn't fully distilled. I don't know how that makes sense but the guy writing it sure seemed to know about the process.
So the solution might be as easy as calling the brand that you've found to be safe.

Oh hehe I can't help but mention I once found myself at Raffles and of course had to have a Singapore Sling! Weeeeeeeee!

I drink Capt. Morgans, and Parrot Bay. Just recently I took the big plunge and went back to Black velvet. I use to drink it all the time before I got sick but then it is made with grain. But now they say if it is distilled it is safe. So I finely went and tried it again in the form of a Duck Fart:

Kalula, Bailys, Crown royal. ( I use Black velvet because it is cheaper )

I seemed to do just fine on it so I am back with the Black velvet.

Murph, I didn't see the fine print on the ice cream because we were at a restaurant that had a gluten free menu. At the time I didn't know ice cream could be bad for me because I was diagnosed with it a week or so earlier. But so then I guess I can have a Singapore Sling? BTW now I am very careful about ice cream and even more careful about alcohols.

I know that Di Saronno is safe. I contacted the company a couple of years ago and have never had a problem. In my experience very few ice creams from the grocery store have gluten. I have found that most major brands are gluten-free. Many Breyers, Eddy's and Dreyers are safe. In general I tend not to worry about ice cream. Having said that you may have gotten sick from cross contamination if you were at a resturant.

You need to figure out what is safe for your own body. Some of us tolerate grain derived alcohols but some can't. The celiac sprue association has a excellent starter list that addresses alcohol consumption. I feel the safest way to decide whether you tolerate any food or alcohol is to do a challenge with it. Drink a bit for 3 to 5 days every day without adding anything else that is suspect and watch for a reaction between days 3 to 7.

Yeah hez, most ice creams are safe I have found out. I'm not sure but I would say 30% aren't. I tried looking up TCBY and Friendlys but I didn't see anything on their sites. As far as Carvel, some of their products are ok and some are not.


Ravenwoodglass, yes I have heard some people are reacting to distilled liquores while others aren't. I was trying some drinks at a local bar and I haven't had any bad reactions accept for a little heartburn. My worry is that I might be drinking something and not display any outward signs of illness but it could be doing harm on the inside. Also, I'm not sure if it's part of the illness or just me but I get drunk very easily, like one drink and I could be drunk for longer than an hour, even if I eat. Two drinks can send me spinning for hours. I hope it's just me and nothing bad is happening.
