We went to the nutritionist on Wednesday. She specializes in Celiac and other food allergies and she really knew her stuff. I told her that I had pulled my son off of Danimals because of the statement on their website, and she told me to take it with a grain of salt.

Dannon says they can't guarantee their products don't have gluten because they get their food stabilizers from a third party company. If there is wheat in them, they have to tell you. She did not know of any food stabilizers that use barley. So, she said to go ahead and use my judgment, but it is highly unlikely that there would be barley in there.

Do any of you "experts" out there have any opinions on this?

Thanks in advance,

Margaret

If a company won't say for sure, then I refuse to buy their product. Barley must have some good qualities or else it would not be in almost every cereal! wink.gif It's true that they have to list wheat, but I still stick to Yoplait who will disclose all gluten.

I would agree with your nutritionist, but I despise companies that use these CYAs.

I don't like them either, but they have kid-sized yogurt drinks that my son actually will drink. The yoplait ones are too big and rather gelatinous in texture and have kind of a chalky taste.

I just keep my fingers crossed that he'll be less picky once he feels better. But it hasn't happened yet!

I disagree with your nutritionist--if a company will not disclose the ingredients, do not trust them. Dannon has always been secretive. I will not purchase their products.

I go with yoplait also, they have even started to use a gluten-free label. One word of caution though now that they have begun the gluten-free labeling their cherry vanilla does not carry the gluten-free label, it was one my DS ate constantly. He also had been having a great deal of problems with CC for about 6 months or so, not just due to cherry yogurt but also to living and working with gluten. I would not touch a Dannon product, I do listen to CYA statements, I feel they are given for a reason as many times I will react to a product that the statement is made with. Whether you avoid them or not is up to you and how sensitive you are but I would wait until fully healed before challenging with a product with a CYA statement.

Have you tried the Tillamook yogurt drinks? That might be a tastier option. I believe that all Tillamook yogurt flavors are gluten free, except if they have any obvious ones, but I don't know about the drinks. If their products are carried in your area, it might be worth it to call them. Just trying to throw out an idea.
