My husband and I are thinking about taking a cruise on Holland America Lines (ship - MS Westerdam). I had never heard of them before but it looks like they are rated highly and the price is great! I have been on Celebrity and Royal Caribbean and have really enjoyed myself (before gluten free). Now I'm worried about the whole food issue. I noticed some postings about Royal Caribbean, but would like to explore this option as well. Thanks for any input!

I was debating a cruise with some friends, I talked to Holland America. Holland America is very well versed on Celiac disease and said it would be no problem if you let them know at time of booking and again when on board. I also know others who have been on Holland America and said they would travel no other, because not only were they treated like royalty but not once were they glutened.

I was just on the Statendam to Alaska and although I had to fax them the number of pieces of bread I wanted and any thing else, by number. When I got on the ship they were very nice and aware that I had celiac disease. It took 3 days for them to figure out that I would like breakfast and lunch, not just dinner. I am judging this on cruises with NCL and Royal Carib. , they recognized me at the door and knew what my order was before I sat down. Food wise it was last place in my cruise log. The ship was beautiful and well maintained. I wasn't glutened, but it was not as easy as other cruises. It probably also depends on awareness of the staff of celiac disease. Good luck and have fun on your cruise, they did have great blueberry muffins at breakfast and pancakes, so the last 4 days were tasty.
