I have been diagnosed now for two years and try to follow the gluten free recommendations but I gained weight as soon as my gut was cured (yeah) but now none of my usual strategies to lose weight work. Because they all involved gluten consumption. Help!! I have gained fifty pounds and there seems to be no end in sight.

If you PM or email me your current height, weight, age current activity level, any other allergies (than gluten) and food loves and hates I can get you a 'plan' I've created based on what I've done to lose and keep off 100#. It's really not something that I can post because it is very specific to each person. I really try to tailor it. I'd be interested to hear from any other person I've given it to, if you've tried it and how it worked for you.....

it's not uncommon to gain weight - you can absorb nutrients now. as for losing it, it's a matter of taking in less than you burn. that matter isn't so easy, though, as how much you burn is highly individualized (and varies with so many things). it may take some time to find out what sort of fuel your body runs best on, and how it does best with burning fuel, so patience and learning (about nutrition, exercise, and your body) is important.

My name is Evie and I was diagnosed just over 2 years ago. I am 41 and have had Type 1 (insulin dependant) diabetes for the past 35 years and also have an underactive thyroid (talk about a tripple wammy huh)? Anyhow, I went from 145 to 190 in the past 2 years and had even hired a personal trainer that I worked with for 3 moths and still didn't lose a pound. On top of it all, I am only 4ft. 10inches tall! My Dr. just put me on a high dose of Merida and I did drop 10 pounds after the first 2 weeks but these last 2 weeks I have not lost anything. I don't eat high carb foods (rice, potatoes) and maybe buy a loaf of gluten free bread once every couple of months, no chips, or gluten free snacks although I do eat popcorn several times a week and use corn tortillas sometimes but still can't lose weight. Can you PLEASE give me any advise or what kind of "plan" you would suggest for me.........

Judy - I have heard people on other celiac boards rave about the Weight Watchers core diet - see this link. I don't know much about it, but it is supposed to be quite amenable to the gluten-free diet. I had always been very thin before my diagnosis, but once I went gluten-free, I started to put on weight rapidly. I got pregnant and gained 60 pounds! Holy crap - that's like carrying a second grader around with you all the time. After I had the baby, I got serious about losing the weight. I have had to give up most of the gluten-free breads and cookies. Many of them have a lot of simple carbs and starches. I do still eat bread and cookies occasionally, but not nearly as often as I used to. It took me 5 months to lose all of the baby weight, and now my weight has drifted down to 5 pounds less that when I got pregnant. I think if I lose 5 more pounds I will be happy.

It may also take a while for your body to normalize. It may have been malnourished for a while, and is trying to rebuild itself. Sometimes this causes a rapid weight gain as your body tries to hold on to every possible calorie.

I hope you find a weight loss strategy that works for you.

I helped my entire office lose weight this summer on this diet. It is really simple, and cheap. Plus they all dropped a lot of weight. All you have to do is:

- Drink at least 64 oz of water every day, with at least 8 oz before a meal or a snack
- have at least 7 servings of fruits and veggies
- get at least 25 grams of fiber a day from non-grain food (because you can't have gluten this is practically a given. See this chart for levels: http://www.wehealny.org/healthinfo/dietary...tentchart.html)
- never eat a fruit or veggie without some form of protein
- only one serving of junk a day
- don't eat any food with more than 5 ingredients

What the ended up eating was normally a veggie omelet for breakfast (to save time in the morning sautee up a ton of veggies over the weekend and freeze them in baggies, then you will be able to just throw them in) and an apple with peanut butter as a mid-morning snack. Then for lunch they would have chili (I can send you my super easy recipe if you want) and whatever fruit was on sale. For an afternoon snack they would have berries and yogurt. And for dinner they would have whatever their wife was cooking. If you want to be healthy do potato or rice with a meat and a veggie. For dessert they would normally have their junk serving-- for some this was a glass of wine, others it was some M&Ms.

Because this has so much fiber and water you are full longer and are less likely to graze. Plus, it is a very natural diet so you eat much healthier and feel better, so you are more willing to work out and keep to it.
