I have been working on my house since the beginning of Nov, doing destruction, repairs and remoldeling. The latest was putting up the drywall, mudding, laying down the ceramic tile (which means mixing and pouring adhesive) and today, I have to do the grout.

How do I find out if any of these construction products contain gluten? I have heard that drywall has gluten in it but the drywall is already up. If we got sick from that, we would all be sick, all the time. I am wondering if its the plaster. There's a cloud in the air at all times when doing projects like this. Also, I have used the plaster on a few occasions.

I need proof. I can't go on here say for this one. It makes a huge difference if I can't work on my house and have to pay someone to do it. It's almost done, just a few more weeks.

I researched this once. Drywall doesn't have gluten in it. Products you may use when you are drywalling might.

You can look at the labels and see, or contact the manufacturers. Try googling too -- I remember one site that actually listed the ingredients of assorted products like this. (Don't have it anymore).

Even absent gluten, it would be a good idea to work with a mask. It can't be good to breath any of that stuff in.

Being someone who has severe chemical sensitivity triggered by an exposure to toxic fumes, I would recomend you where a painters mask regardless of whether these items have gluten.

The answer as to whether this stuff is getting you is yes. The NIH has a listing of nonfood sources of gluten containing substances. I will see if I can find it, it has drywall and the compound (the danger with the drywall is not when it is up but when you are cutting it), it was how I finally figured out why I was so sick when I remodeled my store. It also lists other home repair products and shampoos and such. I learned a lot from that site and will see if I can find it again to give you a link. It is interesting to me that the NIH considers it important enough to have a listing of non food gluten when so many doctors blow off the need for one.

Edit: Unfortunately when I went back in all it was listing was shampoos, rogaine, and conditioners. I don't have a lot of time this morning, and they may have changed the set up of the search process. I will have to see later if this will get us where we need to go. I did note on a quick search that if you have the name of the drywall maker or product that a sheet will come up but don't have the time to see if it gives all the info we need.
