Hi all, I have a nasty case of strep and will be going to the doctor tomorrow for some antibiotics... are most gluten free? I would think they are. Unfortunately stupid HMO insurance requires generics so it's tough to get ahold of companies to find out...and my pediatrician, though very nice and helpful, doesn't know much about celiac (do any of them? rolleyes.gif ) Ugh, as if being sick weren't a pain in the butt enough...did I mention I'm going to have to make up half of my midterms? sigh...

thanks fellow celiacs for listening to my rants tongue.gif and for any advice

My own experience is that I have never encountered a prescription drug, whether generic or brand-name, that has gluten. Your pharmacy should be able to contact the manufacturer of any drug they sell and ask the question. Typically, the generics follow the identical formula, including "inactive" ingredients, that the original name brand uses. The patent will explain the formulation. It is a public record--they just replicate it once the patent expires.

I also haven't found any prescription med that had gluten (as opposed to a CYA statement), but you can ask the pharmacist for the name of the generic manufacturer (he/she will have that readily available).

Hi there, I maybe too late on this reply but I was just on Amoxicillin and Z-Pak according to the pharmacy neither have gluten. Good luck and hope you feel better.
