I've read that sometimes women have I.V.'s during labor for various reasons. If this were to be the case, does it need to be gluten free? I would think most I.V. solutions are gluten-free but you never know. Since it's essentially by-passing my digestive system the gluten wouldn't have an effect on me right?

You don't need to worry about IV's or any injectable medications--none contain gluten.

If/when they switch you over to oral meds, you will need to have them checked for gluten.

IVs contain glucose made from corn, which is a problem for people intolerant to corn. But they don't have gluten.

I recently had to have 8 iron IV infusions. These infusions also required that I got Solumedrol IV prior to the iron. I could tell I was getting gluten and they changed the IV med to Solucortef. All is fine now with no other changes in meds or diet. In my opinion and the doctors - Solumedrol had gluten; the manufacturer had never tested it for gluten. Solucortef had been tested. My advice try have doctors research medications prior to your infusions.

I've had two IV's for procedures/sugery in the last several months and have had major lymph node pain after each one. I'm not sure what was in the IV's, or if it was the anesthetic drugs but I can't think of any other reason why my lymph nodes went nuts. Corn? There's a possibility...

I typically try to avoid corn. I can usually tolerate it in small amounts. I'm freaking out about the glucose test. My doc. was not very friendly when I brought up that I reacted to corn products and said there weren't any other options. Ugh. I've heard of women using jelly beans and POM juice.....I'll need to do some more research. If it was in an I.V.,,, I don't know. I am aware that any meds. they give me otherwise need to be gluten-free. It's very stressful between trying to plan for my first childbirth experience and worry about being gluten-free, DF, SF. Oh I can't wait until May when my little guy will be here!!!

It was my experience that you don't have to have an IV during childbirth if you don't request and/or need any drugs in case of an emergency.
