I had suspected strep throat last week. My doc prescribed plain ol' penicillin. I took 3 tablets over two days.

On the second night, I had a flip out session with my kids. I got so angry, really yelling, like I haven't in a long time. I felt like Jekyl and Hyde.

I couldn't figure it out. I started wondering if I got gluten somehow. I wondered if it was the penicillin, so I quit it (btw, my throat culture results didn't come in before the holiday....but I feel all better now, must not have been strep).

As I've been thinking about it, I remember that my Dad used to see mold on bread and say, "look penicillin!" Because that's how it was dsicovered.

OMG!!! Do they still somehow make it in a way that has gluten?? I carefully checked on my last medication that I was prescribed, but this one I totally forgot to check on.

It's not on the gluten-free list from the gfdrugs site.

Anyone know for sure about penicillin???

Thanks,

M

You have to check on the manufacturer. Two of my kids have strep, too. All Thursday I was calling the pharmacy, manufacturer, etc. The company I called was Ranbaxy. They said all their amoxocillin is gluten-free. (Btw, the problem with strep is that 24 hours after you start taking the meds, you'll feel a ton better. It doesn't mean you're over it, you've just killed enough of the easy to kill bacteria to give yourself the feeling you're better. The rest will start growing again.)

Here are two med lists to check out:

Thanks...Penicillin isn't on either list. Yikes. I'll call the pharmacy and manufacturer tomorrow.
