Hi, My name is Lori LYnn, I am 16 years old, was diagnosed at the age of 6 (I don't wish to diclose my home state, but it is in USA.
What were you thinking when you were diagnose?I was actually really glad that I had finally found out why I was having problems. My whole life I had
really bad skin preoblems. I had huge red welps that itched like crazy, all over my body. I also had extremely dry skin. Now, I still have dry skin (that's just genes, other family members have it too) but not at all to the extent it was before I was diagnosed.
How did you react when you heard?I really don't remeber much, but I think I remember sitting in the bathtub and my mom coming in to tell me the results and I started shouting, "Yeah, I have Celiac Disease!" Like I said, I was happy, not because of the disease but because it was a solution to my problem.
How did your family react? What were some of their responses?I reallydon't remember much, it was so long ago. I know my parents were relived to find a reason for my skin condition and my size(I was very small). I really doon't know about anyone else.
What sort of tips or advice do you offer for other teenagers who are just now being diagnosed? It is going to be hard, but it gets easier each day. Read labels constantly and learn to recognize the hidden glutens. Don't be afraid about hurting peoples feelings when you don't eat something they offer. Explain to them why you can't eat it, and if they say, "Just a little bit won't hurt," tell them it will and stand your ground. If they refuse to listen, that is their problem, but be nice and polite. It's not the end of the world. Other people know how you feel, you're not the only one out there. Keep your chin up
What are some horror stories the you have experienced while being a Celiac. My family and I ate at a new Chinese place, instead of our usual. That night I threw up so much. It was so awful, I'm nauseated just writing about it. Now, I'm afraid to eat Chinese anywhere but our usual.
How do you handle dating being a Celiac?I don't date, so that is not a problem with me. But, when I go places with my friends, all of them know I have celiac disease, so we'll go places where we know there is something I can eat. Try to learn to recognize foods that might have gluten in them (soups, most fried things, gravy, etc.).
"Why me/Why now?" storiesI really don't have any. I was diagnosed so young that it was easier for me to adjust.
How did you come to realize that having celiac disease was not the end of the world?I never have thought it was the end of the world, but I do get discouraged sometimes. I try to remember that God never puts me in a situation that I can't handle. That really helps me to avoid cheating.
How did you tell your friends? How did they react? When you're 6 and you hear the word "disease" you think "contagious." Not all of my friends backed away from me when I told them, but a few did. I had to explain to them that they could not catch celiac disease, it's something you're born with. When I make new friends, I usually don't bring it up right after I introduce myself. When ever it does come up, they usually ask a few questions about celiac disease, what I can and can't eat, what the symptoms are, etc. Usually it is not a ig deal.
Tell me a time that you have cheated, if you have, or a time that you have really wanted to.The first 8 years after being diagnosed, I never cheated on purpose. In the past 2 years, Ive become a little slack, but am trying to get better.
It started when my mom(who has celiac disease), my brother, and I were at Longhorn Steakhouse. My brother was eating the lucious loaf of bread, but not rubbing in how good it was. My mom and I could not resist, and the two of us cut a slice and smothere it with butter. The whole time my brother was getting on to us. It was all down hill from there. I never eat a gluten filled meal or anything like that, but I will sneak a cookie sometimes, or pinch off a piece of that fried chicken.
Tell me a time when your friends have tried to get tyou to cheat.I am very close to most of my friends, and they are all very understanding. None of the have tried to get me to cheat, but if I cheat in fornt of them, they sometimes get on to me.
